5 tips for caring for your precious gemstone jewellery

Updated: Sep 23

When you invest in fine jewellery, you not only acquire a stunning piece of wearable art, but also a precious heirloom. To ensure your jewellery maintains its brilliance and beauty, proper care is essential so we're here to answer some of your most asked questions regarding fine jewellery care; can I wear it to bed? Should I take it off at the gym? Can I really clean it with dish soap?

1. First off, understand your gemstone. Each gemstone possesses unique characteristics and requirements for care. Start by familiarizing yourself with the specific needs of your gemstone; the hardness, durability. This knowledge will help you tailor your cleaning and maintenance routine accordingly.

2. Treat your jewellery like you would a little baby, with gentle hands. Avoid rough handling or subjecting the jewellery to unnecessary impacts, as gemstones can be susceptible to fractures or chips. When wearing or removing your jewellery, do so over a soft surface to prevent accidental drops, and as tempting as it may be to flash your jewellery in the gym it's best to leave it in the locker, where it's safe from impact. Lastly don't forget to tuck it in it's little box when you go sleep because how many times have you woken up with a sore hand from bashing it against the headboard when sleeping. That knock could be enough to loosen your setting, or even worse loose your stone.

3. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the lustrous appearance of your gemstone jewellery. However, it is crucial to use appropriate cleaning methods to avoid damaging the gemstones:

  • Say no to harsh chemicals. Exposing your gemstones to chemicals such as bleach, chlorine, or harsh cleaning agents can erode the gemstone's surface or cause discoloration.

  • So what can we use? Prepare a gentle cleaning solution using lukewarm water and a mild, phosphate-free soap. Dip a soft-bristle brush or a cloth into the solution and gently clean your gemstone jewellery. Rinse with clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

  • Ultrasonic cleaners aren't for everyone! Some gemstones require specialized cleaning techniques. For example, ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe for diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, but may damage softer gemstones.

4. Your jewellery box is just for decoration, use it. Proper storage is crucial to prevent scratches, tangles, or other damage to your gemstone jewellery. Consider the following storage tips:

  • Store each piece of jewellery individually to avoid scratches and tangling. We provide you with a soft matte touch snap closure box with velvet interior to host your jewellery. Other great products are soft cloth pouches, jewelry boxes with compartments. Don't have any of those to hand? Wrap them in a soft, lint-free cloth, just makesure you don't throw it out on a whim.

  • Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading or discoloration of certain gemstones. Store your jewellery in a cool, dark place to preserve their colour and brilliance.

  • So it's not just cleaning chemicals we want to steer away from. Makesure to keep your jewelry away from cosmetics, perfumes, and hairspray, as these can potentially damage the gemstones or dull their shine.

5. Periodic professional maintenance to keep your jewellery in optimum condition. Professional jewelers can inspect your jewelry for loose gemstones, damaged prongs, or other issues that may require repair. Their small fee may save you a lost gem in the long run.

By following these tips for caring for your engagement ring, pendant, or bracelet, you can ensure that your precious pieces remain dazzling and retain their value for years to come. With proper handling, cleaning, storage, and occasional professional maintenance.
